My take on Red Bull

So for the past few years I have entered 5 Red Bull Art of Can exhibits. I was told I should buy a lottery ticket since I have managed to show 4 out of 5 times.

I am very fortunate to have shown at these shows. The positive side of these exhibits is showing your artistic side and making MANY,MANY, MANY wonderful new friends and learning more about the different ways to manipulate aluminum. The bad part is I have spent more than I should have on this event. So if I do indeed make another garment out of aluminum and attempt to partake in another event, I am going back to the basics. What do I mean by that??? Well my first piece was the chicago exhibit piece which consisted of 2000 cans, muslin, and left over satin from my wedding gown collection from my senior year of fashion school. This is in complete contrast to my last  exhibition gown. That monster was 17 yards of satin and 40+ yards of organza and swarvoski crystals...which was all out of my pocket.! So back to basics if I do another one of those.

It is a great experience for those of you wanting to experiment in making something out of a material that is normally discarded. This alternative material is definitely a challenge. Its not glamorous in the least until the end product. The biggest question I receive about this is "how do you work with aluminum?" Lets just say....you  have to be extremely patient with it. To begin with, you must acquire an insane amount of cans. Secondly, did you know that Red Bull molds? Yeah it does....and so begins the process of cutting and cleaning of cans. Once you've got that down, then you have to mold the aluminum into whatever your little heart thinks it should be. As crazy as it sounds,  you gotta let your work tell you where to go. I know that I have spent countless hours in frustration trying to make it what I want it to look like.

Good Luck to you if you are going to try making something out of aluminum...it definitely is challenging. =D
